Empower your right brain

I have two, wonderful, daughters and, when they were younger, we used to spend a lot of time making up stories together. In our stories, we roamed from the deserts of the Sahara all the way to the edge of space, we met animals that talked, flowers that glowed in the dark and even a penguin that could paint!

Usually, we would start by choosing the ingredients for our story - a place (forest, seaside, mountain etc.), a girls name and a boys name, a colour and, sometimes, an object.

Once we had all the elements, it was time to start inventing connections  between  people, places and events.

This is the essence of story-telling. It is a very right-brained thing to do and it is also a lot of fun!

And  FUN is the key word when it comes to activating our right brain. It is playful, divurgent and unstructured so it functions particularly well in informal, non-judgemental settings that have a game-like feel to them.  This is probably why children are so good at tapping into their right brains.

As you follow the exersizes in the video on this page, I am going to ask you to start tapping into YOUR right brain by writing one paragraph of a story, and I just know that some of you are going to be a bit freaked out by this at first.

In fact, I can almost hear some of you saying to yourselves  "I haven't done this kind of thing since I was 5 years old.", or "I can't write"

Or, perhaps you are thinking to yourself,"I don't have time for this, I've got emails to reply to and meetings to go to."

So, I'm going to ask you to  trust me - just for 10 minutes or so. If you can get past that initial reserve, it is surprising how quickly your right brain will get energised.

So, come on give it a go RIGHT NOW and lets see what happens - IT WILL BE FUN!
